I got the best job in Lockdown period!

I am currently working as an Inside Sales Executive in one of the Multinational Company. When I was giving an interview for this company, the interviewer asked me one of the most common question, please introduce yourself.

I started my introduction with my resume objective. I said with a confident voice, "I am a Mechanical Engineer by Qualification and Sales person by Passion."

The interviewer replied with a curiosity, "Okay, Just stop and explain to me Why Sales? I can read here that you are a Mechanical Engineer by qualification then why you choose the sales profession and over that you are telling me, it is your passion also, how?"

Actually I am too familiar with this type of question because not only the interviewer but also my colleagues, friends ask me this question, “Harshada, Why you are into sales?”

By keeping my confidence I said, "I like socializing and I like to interact with people more than a computer. And I believe only by talking to people I can help your organization to generate more leads."

Generally I don’t give this answer to my friends but “बात सिलेक्ट होने की जो थी” Interviewer like and accepted my answer. Finally I got selected.

But I realized one truth later that it was not just an answer to impress the interviewer but this is what I am. After working into sales you change as a person.

Let me unwrap that truth for you.

Read it carefully, you will get to know the fun behind how a Mechanical engineer turned into a passionate sales person.

I am a COVID batch pass out engineering student. Means 2020 Batch pass out. During that pandemic, everyone was struggling to get a job, in the same way I was also running in that race of getting a job.

In my friend circle everyone got selected during on campus placement but I was not. Along with that I also met with an accident that time and one more good news is I was unable to walk. All these things were coming at the same time. I was feeling depressed. Nothing good was happening with me. The only thing I used to do was negative self-talk.

But one day fortunately I got one opportunity as a sales and marketing intern in a local company. That time the stipend was very low and I was not interested in the sales job. I refused to do it, still my father convinced me "Beta, You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. First go and get into any job you find."

So, finally I joined that company because my Dad pushed me. In the initial days of that internship my behavior was like, I don't care about this job, I am here for 6 months after that I will switch it. My mindset was prepared to switch the sales domain. I behaved like a robot for the initial 2 months. I was just following the instructions given by the manager not using a single percentage of my brain to complete any kind of work.

But one thing I understood was during that COVID situation everybody’s job was in danger, many of the well-known companies terminated multiple employees from their jobs and here is me who had a job but was not satisfied. That time I decided to make an effort in the same job. From that day I started learning sales by putting all my heart.

Do you know what I have realized? This is the safest job ever. Because I am helping a company to generate leads. Many people lost their job because their job is time based job.

They just have to fill up the hours in their company and finish the work given by company. But sales people like me we have to fill up the target. Because of the target a sales team achieves, everyone else in the company survives.

So If I am great at my work which is selling and helping any company to generate leads, they will think twice before giving a pink slip. It’s a profession where company needs you more.

Please take a note of my friendly advice. No matter in what profession you are working make sure you are learning about sales.

After this realization I took various initiatives, conducted online surveys for previous customers, started building relationships with them through calling, messaging, solving their problems, Conducted online plant visits for prospects, started maintaining monthly sales target reports, and started interacting with business owners during inquiries.

In this way I generated leads for company and happiness for myself at the same time. Actually at that point this Mechanical Engineer turned into a sales professional. I have learned and enjoyed a lot in my job role. And that’s how I got my passion for the profession.

That was my first job opportunity and with all my heart and I want to say thank you to the person who helped me understand sales. Now I have decided to build my career in sales.

And that’s why I say I got the best job in Lockdown period.
